Frequently Asked Questions
What are self-sealing sterilization pouches?
Self-sealing sterilization pouches are designed for easy handling during storage or transport. The pouches are pre-sealed with an adhesive tape that can be easily removed after opening. This allows you to open them quickly and efficiently in any environment. They also have excellent shelf life due to their high barrier properties.
The Emerald Self-Seal Sterilization pouch is a convenient way for you and your staff to sterilize small quantities of medical supplies such as syringes, needles, bandages, gauze pads, etc., in one easy step. The self-seal feature allows you to easily open the bag without tearing off any part of the sterile barrier material. This product can be used with all types of medical equipment including IV sets, blood collection tubes, surgical instruments, sutures, scalpels, clamps, forceps, scissors, tubing, catheters, etc. It also works well on other products that require sterilizing like dental tools.
This package contains three 1½”x9” Emerald Self Sealing Sterilization Pouches. Each pouch has two layers: A top layer made up of polyethylene film laminated onto a bottom layer which consists of high-density polypropylene film. Both layers have been treated with a special coating called “self-sealing adhesive” which makes them adhere together when they come into contact. When this happens, the inner surface of each pouch becomes sealed shut, so no air gets inside during storage. Once opened, these seals will remain intact until the next time the pouch needs to be closed again.
Each pouch comes complete with a resealable zipper closure at the end of the opening flap.
How long are sterilization pouches good for?
Heat-sealed, plastic peel-down pouches, and wrapped packs sealed in 3-mil (3/1000 inch) polyethylene overwrap have been reported to be sterile for as long as 9 months after sterilization.
Are sterilization pouches reusable?
These paper/plastic sterilization pouches are disposable and recommended to be used only a single time. However, a survey on autoclave dental packaging in Thailand found that such pouches were routinely reused in more than 80% of the private clinics and in about 30% of the hospital clinics surveyed.

Why keep instruments in sterilization pouches clean?
Instruments need to be kept sterile before being used on patients. If not properly packaged, it can take several days for bacteria to grow enough to cause infection. In addition, if instruments are stored improperly, they could become damaged from moisture absorption. Properly storing your instruments helps prevent damage and extends their useful lifespan.
There are many different types of instrument packages available today. Some are specifically designed for specific uses while others are intended for multiple applications. There are even some products that combine both functions.
What are some differences between Sterilization Bags vs. Surgical Trays?
It all depends upon what type of function you plan on using your instruments. For example, if you want to store your instruments between surgeries then you should look for something like a surgical tray. On the other hand, if you just want to protect them from getting dirty then you might consider using one of our sterilization bags.
There are many reasons why people choose to purchase either sterilization bags or surgical trays. One reason is that there are certain situations where you would prefer to use one product over another. Another reason is simply based on personal preference. Here we discuss the differences between these two options.
Surgical Tray – These are usually constructed out of stainless steel or aluminum and are meant to hold instruments safely away from contamination. Most surgical trays include slots along the sides to allow access to the instruments without having to remove the entire tray. Many surgical trays feature handles as well.
Sterilization pouches – A sterile pouch is used in conjunction with a sterilizing device to safely and effectively sterilize equipment that must be kept clean and free of contamination.
How to use a sterilization pouch?
Fold perforation back and crease with the protective strip still in place. Load the clean instruments into the pouch while wearing gloves. The bag should not be overfilled. It is recommended to fill 3/4 full. The package should not be pierced by instruments. Remove excess air. Remove strip from adhesive and fold at the perforated line and adhere to both the plastic and the paper to form a tight seal.
